Fishermen Youth Soccer (FYS), based in Gloucester, MA, is a volunteer organization that provides boys and girls ages 4 to 19 with the the opportunity to play soccer in the fall and spring. Our mission is to instill a love of the game of soccer and to provide instruction and playing opportunities in an atmosphere that is supportive, fun and developmentally appropriate, and that increases in competitiveness as children are ready for it.
Founded by a small group of parents in 1975, we depend on volunteers; our coaches, fundraisers, webmasters, registrar, program directors and all board members volunteer their time so that kids have the opportunity to play soccer. When you register please let us know you if you are able to help out, or contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Following are brief descriptions of our travel and academy programs:
FYS Academy For children in PK - grade 2 , the FYS Academy is comprised of Little Strikers, GK and G2. Programs meet Saturdays. The FYS Academy features developmental activities and scrimmages. Activities emphasize fun and ball skills, while scrimmages guide children in the basics of game play and offer an age-appropriate competitive experience in a supportive, community spirited environment. In scrimmages, teams are small so that all players get many opportunities to dribble the ball (“touches”). We teach players to support their teammates and control the ball as a team, rather than just “kick It”. When grouping children for scrimmages, we strive for balanced games that increase in competitiveness as players are ready for it, and we do our best to minimize the need for kids to wait on the sidelines as subs. On Saturdays, our FYS Academy sessions are held at upper Magnolia Fields at 550 Western Ave in Gloucester. For more information about the FYS Academy, please contact the Acadamy Director
Players in grades 3-post grad, play teams from (mostly) nearby towns that are part of the Essex County Youth Soccer Association (see ECYSA.org). Games are on Saturdays and Sunday and each team's coach generally offers two weekday afternoon / early evening practices per week. Players of all skill levels are welcome, and the ECYSA is structured to ensure a range of opportunities from recreational to highly competitive. The Spring season culminates in a season play off at Pingree school and Teams in the MTOC division have the oppertunity to play in the State Chapionsips.
